Field Trip to the Sugar Bush

I would like to share with you a nice trip that I had with my classmates last year. On that trip we went to a farm that had a lot of trees to see how to produce maple syrup from the trees.
A maple syrup farm is called (sugar bush). The farmers selected trees that were large and high. Maple syrup season is usually from mid-March to mid-April, why? Because the weather is cold at night (below freezing) followed by warm, sunny days (above 5c). After that the farmers collect the sap to filter it, and then they boil it to make maple syrup. There are many colours of syrup. There is light, medium and dark. If the syrup goes lighter, the price goes high too. At the end, I advise everyone to go and try this trip since it was a very wonderful trip for us and our children who came with us.

Yes, that was a fun school field trip at the [[#|Credit]] Valley Conservation area. We also took this class to a Sugar Bush on McLaughlan Road south of Matheson, North of Eglinton here in Mississauga. There is a lot to see at the Kortright Centre too. Just google Sugar Bush Ontario to see what's nearby. The season must be over now, but there is always next year ! - Kamikaze 04/10/14

November 11 > Remembrance Day

To a peaceful Remembrance Day.
Here is the quotation from Tecumseh (1768-1813)

"Sell a country! Why not sell the air, the clouds and the great sea, as well as the earth ? Did not the Great Spirit make them all for his children ?"

It may be a sad day happening even now, or not too far in the future that humans do try to sell more than the earth beneath our very feet.

HAPPY FATHER's DAY !

June 16, 2013

To all our dear father's and grandfathers, and those who fathered us ... who loved us dearly and provided guidance, protection and lots of adventure !
Tell me about your dad or someone who was like a father to you. Was he strict ? Were you his pet ? Was he handy ? Was he funny ? Was he wise ? Was he a great cook ? Did he have any secrets ?
I heard on the radio celebrity comedian, stunt man, movie maker, and movie star Jackie Chan is in town Toronto for the Luminato Festival, and he was telling the story of how he discovered recently that his father was a secret spy and how he tried to make a documentary about his father's story.
The very very busy Jackie Chan also told the story about how his own son called him long distance on Father's Day to wish him a Happy Father's Day, and Jackie Chan got angry and scolded his son saying, "Don't call me today ! Call me everyday ! Everyday is Father's Day !"

April 17, 2012 is the 30th anniversary of the Canadian Charter of Freedoms and Rights.
http://www.pch.gc.ca/pgm/pdp-hrp/canada/frdm-eng.cfm
Check it out.
I myself was surprised to hear how young it was!

Keen, 12/04/17

Oh! I realized that some of the Canadian Charter of Rights were became a law just in
30 years ago. At that time, I was in high school. It seems that there are many other things
need to be done in the future and Canadians will work hard for it.

Lucky, 12/04/17

The Eleventh Hour Canada is known for it’s peacekeeping and I just wanted to share some lyrics of a hymn that I like.
It kind of works in the big picture of things as well as at home with our neighbours, our classmates, our siblings, and our family too. ‘War, peace’ … it’s a discussion you can talk about around the dinner table with your family, your children and parents too.

I like to remember the “Golden Rule” too, whose meaning is common across many religions, “Do not do onto others that which you would not have them do onto you.” If only we would all obey the Golden Rule imagine what the world would be like.

Let There Be Peace

Let there be peace on earth And let it begin with me.
Let there be peace on earth The peace that was meant to be.
With God as our father Brothers all are we.
Let me walk with my brother In perfect harmony.

Let peace begin with me Let this be the moment now.
With every step I take Let this be my solemn vow.
To take each moment And live each moment With peace eternally.
Let there be peace on earth, And let it begin with me.

Monday, October 10, 2011 - THANKSGIVING Holiday - NO CLASS

Happy Thanksgiving !

Here is the story about Canadian Thanksgiving (see below).
Perhaps you would like share a similar holiday or tradition of your own here with us.

At my house we like to say a little prayer of thanks before dinner.
It goes like this.

For food in a world where many walk in hunger,
For faith in a world where many walk in fear,
For friends in a world where many walk alone,
We thank thee Lord,
Amen

I hope you all have a chance to go outside with your family for a walk to enjoy the Canadian fall colours this weekend.

The exhibition I attended last Thursday was a part of Salmon Run Project in order to celebrate Mississauga’s precious salmon and beautiful Credit River. There were 24 pieces of art created by 24 artists in the exhibition, all were images of salmon made from different kinds of materials. I liked those with pictures on the body of salmons most.
On the side of exhibition area, a man was making beautiful fishhooks with various feathers and hairs of animals. He talked about fishing salmon, which reminds me of an article about salmon. Salmon breeds in fresh water, after several years, it swims to the sea, where it spends three years to grow up. When it’s time for female salmon to give birth, it crosses over thousands of miles to come back to its birthplace. To salmon, it is a dangerous and long trip. It might be caught by human, or come up with natural disasters. The salmon that succeeded in arriving home will die after breeding thousands of baby salmons. The most tragic fact is that over 1000 baby salmons only 3 can survive and grow up. The life of salmon is a process of struggling for life and reproduction.

CNIB - Vision Health
Guest Speaker: Susan & November visit the class to inform and share their experiences of vision impairment to total blindness, and the services offered by CNIB to alleviate the challenges their clients and families may have. There was a show and tell of technology available to help vision impaired people including brail, talking computers & clocks, bar code and colour readers, Victor the book reader, etc.
The most helpful tips were how to approach a blind person, and what help can be offered, and how to offer it.
The most surprising tidbit was hearing about the service dogs and horses too !
The most depressing news was about the misunderstanding and the hostility that vision impaired people encounter when out and about on their own.

May 2011 The Art Gallery of Mississauga -Field Trip.
IMG_4088.JPG

OnThursday night, I had a fantastic visit in Art Galley of Mississauga.
There were two parts of exhibitions on the night. One is called “White Wash” presented by a Pakistan-born Canadian artist Amin Rehman. He uses encaustic, acrylic, digital, and neon text to provide us his understanding of Pakistan and Canadian cultural life. Some of his works are short and concisely express the cross-cultural differences, such as “God is on our side, Allah is on your side”, “A is for Allah, A is for America”. But some are shocking and causing me to imagine the life in Pakistan, such as “Becoming a suicide bomber was my ticket to heaven”. Through his works, I found that art is not only beautiful pieces for people to enjoy, but also a way to make people thinking.
The other exhibition is “The art of Bollywood”, which were dozens of hand painted cinema billboards and posters of bollywood movies created by 10 Indian artists. All the posters are vividly pained, and can fully express the contents of movies. I can see some are action movies, some are thrillers, but most must be love stories. When I was enjoying the posters, I met a girl from the Caribbean. We chatted about bollywood movies and surprisingly found we’ve watched the same one recently and both of us like it. Later I met an old lady who is a Chinese brush painting artist. She told me she had also held a painting exhibition before.

by Happy

Hi Happy,
Thank you for writing about the AGM Opening. It was certainly a contrast ... the lightheartedness escapism of "Bollywood" and the ominous messages of the "White Wash" exhibit. The contrasts were also in each exhibit themselves ... and was expressed in the third artists exhibit which was some kind of statement on American culture and 'everyone elses culture'. Food for thought ... and definitely deserving of a reaction from the public viewers.

Happy, you described your experience very well and you did your research too. You made good of the opportunity to listen, speak, read, and write in this excercise. Bravo !

- Keen, 20 May 2011

Keen,
Thank you for your explanation about the exhibit. That makes me understand more clearly about the exhibit now.
